on Growth and Productivity

About SERVICEGAP

There are a huge number of publications:

The overall objective of this research is to produce a comprehensive study on the impact of
market services on aggregate economic growth in the EU and its comparative performance
relative to competitor regions, especially the US.

(i)
To provide an overview of developments in service
industriesin Europe
(work package 1).
This will consist of a quantitative examination of general trends in the provision of services in the EU including growth in outputs, inputs and productivity and will summarise recent developments in the regulation, innovative capacity and internationalisation of services.
It will review the impact of the financial crisis both on the financial services sector
and the wider economy.
It will lay the ground for new research undertaken in subsequent steps. Moreover, the results of this investigation will be disseminated early in the project in order to allow stakeholders to discuss and influence the subsequent research programme.
(ii)
To advance the knowledge base on target areas of current and future
policy
(work packages 2,3 and 4).
These concern services industries andtheir impact on growth and employment creation in Europe. The analysis will be primarily statistical and econometric, complemented by theoretical andqualitative methods. It will be divided into three research areas:
  • oProductivity and its drivers in service industries
  • oFirm strategies in the knowledge-based economy
  • oInternationalisation of service markets and growth
(iii)
To synthesize results and elicit conclusions about traditional policies and inform future policy options (work packages 5 and 6).
This will explore the research undertaken in the three research areas in order to identify
complementary conclusions. Moreover, it will discuss unexploited potentials
for service-driven growth, employment creation in Europeand structural
changes arising from the financial crisis. This in turn will support the
formulation of economic policies such as innovation policies and national and
European regulation of the service sector.
