DRUID papers: 2004 paper no 4 is very interesting:
Lorenz, Edward and Valeyre, Antoine (2004):
Organisational Change in Europe: National Models or the Diffusion of a New 'One Best Way'?.
DRUID Working Paper 2004-4.
ISBN: 87-7873-154-2

Shows that some services are strong on "learning" organisation, some on "traditional", very few on "taylorist".
quotes:
"Drawing on the results of the third European Survey on Working Conditions ... in 2000, this paper offers ... systematic
comparisons of the adoption of new organisation forms across Europe. The paper is divided into five sections. ... factor analysis and hierarchical clustering used to construct a 4-way typology of organisational forms, labelled the ‘learning’, ‘lean’, ‘taylorist’ and ‘traditional’ forms. ...examines how the relative importance of the different organisational forms varies according to sector, firm size,
occupational category, and certain demographic characteristics of the survey population. ... results demonstrate significant
international differences in the adoption of organisational forms characterised by strong learning dynamics and high problem-solving activity. .. the relative importance of the learning form of organisation is both positively correlated with the extent of labour market regulation, as measured by the OECD’s overall employment protection legislation index, and with innovative performance, as measured by the number of EPO patent application per million inhabitants."

Audiovisual Policy - Statistics & Studies EU site on audiovisual sector - lots of studies available, mostly on content-type issues. Interesting sets on digital broadcasting and on new advertising techniques. Since most material on this sector is expensive, this is a treat.

RESER The RESER network has placed recent conference proceedings (2003 and 2004) online, plus reviews of service reesearch in UK Spain and Italy. Guardian Unlimited | The Guardian | In the health trade:
excerpts: "the 'Bolkestein directive', which Britain will seek to push through when it takes up the presidency of the European Union later this year, has two main aims: to erase any national laws and standards that make it difficult for European companies to enter the markets of other member states, and to allow European companies to run businesses anywhere in the EU according to the rules of their 'country of origin'.

The directive ...applies the same rules to healthcare and social services as it does to estate agents, fairground providers, advertising companies and private security firms. The commission no longer sees the services provided by doctors to patients as a special public good to be enjoyed by all citizens, but as an 'economic activity', a commodity to be traded across the EU much like any other.

Healthcare services are thought to amount to about 10% of the EU's GDP, so the potential for private companies to make profits from healthcare is vast. But publicly funded healthcare systems have until now been protected by national laws. Under 'control of entry' regulations in the UK, pharmacies are granted licences to dispense NHS prescriptions only in areas accessible to those most in need. Supermarket giants such as Asda Walmart tried to persuade the government to get rid of this rule but, after a public outcry, the Department of Health refused, knowing that deregulation would destroy many community chemists...."

But it's the DTI that's running this show....
